(More customer reviews)The key is that this is a commercial vacuum, intended for heavy duty use, for people who go around hotel rooms by day, or offices by night. These are applications where durability is key, where a luxury feature is just one more thing to break down. At the same time, light weight is a premium, because the vaccum has to be carried from room to room, office to office, hour after hour. Think of a supercar, one of those high priced cars where they take out the luxury features, replace the aluminum with carbon fiber to save weight, and raise the price by thousands of dollars. The Hoover commercial doesn't have attachments to do drapes, won't convert to a shoulder vacuum, can't clean your car, and makes a lot of noise. The cord doesn't retract and there is no light. It really wasn't intended for home use, so why bother?
In my case, the choice was largely motivated by space considerations. My house was built around 1950, part of the post-World War II housing boom, when the builders were throwing out lots of the old rules, building small houses in a hurry. They built well. Compared to later houses, they were generous with steel beam supports and bracing, but the rooms are small. The master bedroom was designed for a double bed, not the more generous queen and king-size furniture of a more affluent decade. There other bedrooms were equally small, intended as sleeping quarters, not the sleep, entertainment and study centers that followed. A conventional home vacuum would have trouble maneuvering. Proper cleaning called for something smaller, but still capable of real cleaning, getting the dirt out of a carpet that's walked on in a steady straight path.
And that's it. It's what the Hoover does well in steady use. It gets around the furniture, isn't a hassle to take out of the closet, adjusts to floors, high pile and commercial carpeting, and makes enough noise to make the dog hide under the bed. The high powered motor has a bit more suction than most, so it cleans a bit more quickly. The bag has the requisite filter capability and fills from the top, which is the basis for all the non-clogging claims of other cleaners.
Realistically, for home use, you can get something more suitable. There will be lots of cleaners designed to be used once a week, with tools for above floor cleaning, cord retractors and the sort of faux-industrial design that seems to be in style these days. A standard home vacuum will do the job just as well at a lower price, and the benefits of this model may not be noticed. Still, the Hoover commerical has benefits that shouldn't be completely overlooked. The oversized motor saves cleaning time, even if it's only a minute or two (my cleaning ladies love it -- I'm not sure I notice the difference anymore)and will outlast most other machines, or would in heavy duty use. For people with the same circumstances I have, who have tight spaces that call for heavy duty cleaning, this is a good, rational choice. Otherwise, it's a form of overkill -- leave it to the hotel owners and office bulding managers it was designed for.
